Globe artichoke flowers are some of my faves so rather than cut off the buds to eat, I wait and watch them erupt into their rich purple blooms.
They're like giant thistle flowers.
This painting is of the heirloom purple artichoke that has purple/red globes that are eaten raw and young in France and Italy.
The sculptural artichoke globe offers a great opportunity to play with my newly found acrylic inks. They combine the fluidity of watercolour with robust pigment of acrylic and can be painted directly onto the canvas. I overlaid some of the background with thin layers of acrylic paint.
This is one of the first of a selection of quality prints of my botanical paintings.
